Wow. That's a pretty crappy baseball team.

PaulNoonan said...

Yay Errors!

PaulNoonan said...

Ah crap.

PaulNoonan said...

So far this reminds me of one of my softball games.

tracker said...

I'll bet I could get a beer for less than $6.50 at one of your softball games.

E.S.K. said...

I hate sinkerballers

PaulNoonan said...

Treu dat. Or sponsor bar's special today is $3.00 personal pitchers.

They seem to lose their discipline against the sinkerballers. It's like they've never watched Jeff Suppan.

Step 1: Make them come up by taking low pitches.
Step 2: Hammer slow pitches out over the plate.

DannyNoonan said...

Anyone else having problems with MLB.com?

PaulNoonan said...

Not me, I'm fine. Might be some high-traffic problems though. Lot's of day games today.

E.S.K. said...

fucking McGehee....

PaulNoonan said...

Actually, my softball team is more fundamentally sound than this.

tracker said...

I'd sure like to put a bullet in the notion that McGehee is a major league second baseman.

PaulNoonan said...

I'm briefly flipping over to the Cardinals game, as the bastards just went ahead.

Eric said...

McGehee is batting .269

That's fourth best in this lineup. Where else would you put him if not 2b?

tracker said...

Nashville.

PaulNoonan said...

That was an uncharacteristic error, and with Weeks gone, you need him for the time being. It would be nice to improve that situation, however.

Eric said...

What .269 batter do you replace him with?

oops. 264 now.

Eric said...

points for nashville though, that was funny.

Eric said...

Wow. that was efficient

E.S.K. said...

Tracker just wants Joe Dillon back.

E.S.K. said...

The fact that McGehee's .265/.330/.360 line is irreplaceable from within the organization is sort of depressing though.

And fucking Cardinals...

tracker said...

My problem with McGehee is that he's tits on a bull on this team. As a right-handed third baseman, I don't believe he's good enough to take the role of incumbent rh 3b, who's general crappiness is well-documented, but through it all has remained an effective platoon vs lhp.

As a second baseman, prior to this season he played all of seven games there in six minor league seasons. He was a third baseman in spite of the fact that he never displayed the pop of a corner infielder, yet they put him there because he lacked middle infield skills.

If he needs to develop middle infield skills, I'd rather he do it in Nashville.

Furthermore, he's kind of a fat bastard.

tracker said...

Dillon: .364/.462/.500.

Just sayin.

Eric said...

i'll take Outs for $100 Alex

Eric said...

who is that right fielder?

one single propels him from .188 to .235

Eric said...

oh well

Eric said...

47 pitches for Cook. Pretty darn efficient so far.

tracker said...

Yep. Vs. 91 for Yo through 4. I don't see him starting the 6th

PaulNoonan said...

They need to try and take a few walks off of Cook and get those pitches to come up.

PaulNoonan said...

If Mat Gamel ever tries to bunt again I'm going to start spelling his name with two t's.

Eric said...

You don't blame Macha for giving him the green light?

PaulNoonan said...

OK, that's something.

Eric said...

Who comes in for Yo?

PaulNoonan said...

Bill Hall OPS v. Righties = .579

Yo v. Righties = .438

Well, at least he's a little better.

E.S.K. said...

Why would you hit Hall here? Cook is right handed correct?

Please just take a walk.

PaulNoonan said...

Yo's career OPS split against RHP is .620, however.

E.S.K. said...

Holy cow, who could have seen that coming??

PaulNoonan said...

And, of course, you could have pinch hit a good player there.

Why would you pinch hit Hall? Because you're stupid.

Eric said...

Well we won't see him again

tracker said...

I think Hall exceeded expectations by fouling one off.

DannyNoonan said...

Bill hall is so bad.

PaulNoonan said...

3 runs is going to be a tall order for the JV.

tracker said...

Especially with Cook on a complete-game pace.

PaulNoonan said...

OK rookie, let's see that power.

PaulNoonan said...

Swing the bat.

Eric said...

that was a wicked pitch

E.S.K. said...

dis sux

Eric said...

do not F ing walk the pitcher

PaulNoonan said...

I feel this one about to get out of hand completely.

PaulNoonan said...

Alright, the back of the order providing some production.

PaulNoonan said...

Jason Kendall, you'd better not swing at this pitch.

Eric said...

just to fill in, McGehee now batting .291

PaulNoonan said...

Can we stop talking about Batting Average? I'm not in a Batting Average mood. On something I haven't posted yet (and may not) I wrote this this morning:

Mat Gamel, a left-handed hitter, is the other option at third base, but he came into play Wednesday hitting .245 and has only recently found a groove, hitting .333 (8 for 24) in his last nine games.

Mat Gamel has yet to set the world on fire with his hitting (although he certainly hasn’t been bad either), but if we’re going to talk about Gamel, how about we don’t use batting average, and we mention his minor league stats. For instance, in 2008 Gamel hit .325/.392/.531, and before being called up this year he was torching AAA to the tune of 336/.428/.647. So far in the majors he’s shown good patience, a nice approach at the plate, and the ability to hit for power. He’s hitting .240/.309/.440
Do you know what’s fun about Mat Gamel’s batting average? We can use it to show the folly of using small sample size AND batting average simultaneously. You see, Mat’s .240 average is based on the fact that he has 12 hits in 50 official at bats. If you just pro-rate that to 100 ABs, you’ll see that he is on pace for 24 hits per 100 ABs, or (Ta-Da!) .240. Now, consider what would have happened had one or two more baseball managed to find the hole or fall in for a hit. If one extra ground ball gets through the hole, all of a sudden he’s a .260 hitter. If another on squeaks through he’s up to .280! And it works the other way too. If the opposition makes a few great defensive plays, all of a sudden Gamel is a Mendoza line bum.
Let’s not ever use BA again, K?

Eric said...

Substituting furiously now. 2.25 ERA for Peralta

Eric said...

Got any other nerves i can stomp on?

PaulNoonan said...

How about saves? Let's discuss the awesomeness of Heath Bell.

Eric said...

Wait, i've got one.

Peralta hasn't won any games. He must suck.

PaulNoonan said...

Loaded for Braun. Well, can't ask for much more than that.

Eric said...

time for the Hebrew Hammer

PaulNoonan said...

Also, the Cubs have tied up there game. Frak.

Eric said...

gee. Hart with the only RBI.

Eric said...

These next three Rockies are the ones who've batted the most damage.

Eric said...

And another hit for Spilborghs

PaulNoonan said...

I hate Ryan Spillborghs. Every single one of them.

PaulNoonan said...

Ah crap.

Eric said...

Stewart goes again, too.

I approve this intentional walk

Eric said...

Phillips hasn't done anything all day.

If chaos theory holds he'll continue to do nothing

Eric said...

Phillips had to reach into the next county to make contact.

Eric said...

BA says Kendall would like to try MMA when his playing days are over.

Why wait

PaulNoonan said...

That was craptastic.

Eric said...

So how does one determine an acceptable sample size

PaulNoonan said...

1. Don't use BA.
2. I don't know. Some statistician could probably tell you a good minimum. As a rule of thumb I'd go with "the point at which individual occurrences no longer have a seemingly large effect on the statistic in question."

PaulNoonan said...

I also don't think the question requires that you draw a line. As long as you realize what you're dealing with and adjust your conclusions as appropriate, you'll be fine.

tracker said...

Umm, Macha, helll-LOOOOO?!?!? YOU CAN'T PH RIVERA... WHO'S GONNA CATCH THE REST OF THE GAME IF KENDALL DIES BETWEEN INNINGS?????

PaulNoonan said...

Dear Mike Rivera,

If you swing at this pitch I will start calling you Jason Kendall.

PaulNoonan said...

You suck Jason Kendall.

Eric said...

I'd throw at his head to make sure.

Though i'm pretty sure the Brewers carry a third catcher. not certain only cuz i don;t know his name

PaulNoonan said...

Ryan, you're awesome. Mike "Jason Kendall" Rivera, I hate you with the fire of 1000 volcanoes.

PaulNoonan said...

C'mon Rookie!

PaulNoonan said...

Well, that's why you're a rookie I suppose.
