The Fielder Deal

Tom H. is reporting that the Brewers and Prince Fielder have reached a 2-year deal. He thinks it'll be worth around $18 Million and that it'll be reported after Fielder's physical, which is happening today.

I heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend that it's 2 years for $15 Million, not $18 Million. We'll see who's right.

Seems like a good deal. Actually, better than I expected.

Either way it's a great deal for the Crew.

Not something to worry about short term.

Several reports are out that we've signed Counsell too.

I don't hate Counsell. What I hate is him being half a platoon and getting 250 at-bats last year. If he gets, say, 100 at-bats, my hate will only equal 40% of last year's hate, which is hardly much hate at all. Used properly and judiciously, his OK defense and not-horrible OBP will be useful.

the "need" for counsell is totally the result of the refusal to recognize bill hall for what he is-- a super-utility player.

i've never understood why the brewers insist on having a single position for him. a guy who can play 3b, ss, 2b, and cf is valuable. a guy who only plays one is less so.

the fact that half of your platoon (if that's the direction they end up going) can also serve as your utility infielder and an outfielder on double-switches is great. it's like 3/4 of an extra roster spot that you can use to carry that third catcher (so somebody can pinch hit for kendall without the manager having a fit about having "no" reserve catcher) or that pinch runner/defensive replacement (tony gwynn) or that extra bopper off the bench (brad nelson).

also-- mike lamb can catch, so the brewers don't need a third catcher either. if in the 1/1,000,000,000 chance that they pinch hit for kendall and rivera/salome proceeds to get hurt in the remaining inning of the game, he can don the gear for 3 outs and not kill you.

If that's the reason super-utility Counsell has a job here and Branyan does not, Doug Melvin is insane.
